Common birthday parties questions.
Can the menu be themed to the birthday guest?
Yes. Bartenders develop a custom signature cocktail built around the birthday guest's favorite flavors, color palette, or party theme. Recipe cards can be printed as a keepsake.
Will you ID guests at a 21st-birthday party?
In California, no one under 21 may be served alcohol, the birthday guest included. Bartenders make their own service decisions, including when to check ID, and are independently responsible for refusing service to anyone under 21 or visibly intoxicated. As the host, you are responsible for lawful alcohol service at your event. Rules differ in other states. Look for RBS certification when your venue requires it.
How many bartenders do I need for a birthday party?
It depends on both the headcount and the drinks list. As planning guidance for about 3 hours of service: up to 50 guests, 1 bartender; 51–75 guests, 1–2. From there, the ranges split by menu. For beer, wine, ready-to-drink, and basic mixed drinks: 76–100 guests, 1–2; 101–150 guests, 1–3. When the menu includes cocktails or mocktails: 76–100 guests, 2; 101–150 guests, 2–4. Larger parties scale from there. The Smart Staffing Calculator recommends a bartender count from your guest count, service hours, beverage menu, and event type. It recommends at least two above 60 guests when the menu includes cocktails or mocktails, and above 125 guests on any menu.
Can you do a kid-friendly party with a separate NA bar?
Yes. NA-only stations for kids and a separate cocktail bar for the adults is a common setup for milestone birthdays where the whole family shows up.
Do you provide the alcohol?
Hosts purchase the alcohol; the Stock List generates an ingredient-level shopping list. Your bartender brings their own professional tools; glassware and ice are the host's to provide unless you book Ice Service or agree otherwise with your bartender.
Can a bartender stay hidden until a surprise reveal?
Yes — bartenders can hold off on setup visibility or timing until the reveal; walk them through the surprise plan when you book.
Can the whole bar be alcohol-free for a sober celebration?
Yes. Bartenders build a full non-alcoholic menu with the same craft as a cocktail list — not just a soda station.
Can you set up at a rented private room or restaurant, not just a house?
Yes — private-room buyouts and restaurant event spaces are common milestone-birthday venues; some bartenders list a portable bar on their profile. Confirm the venue's own outside-bartender and alcohol policy first.
How does tipping work for a birthday bartender?
Tips are separate from the booking total and go to the bartender — cash or a jar both work. Let your bartender know your preference ahead of time.
