Permits and alcohol rules

San Francisco splits event permitting by location: Recreation and Parks handles the parks and venues it manages, the Presidio goes through the national recreation area, waterfront areas such as the Embarcadero parks, piers and Ferry Building fall to the Port, and events on a city street outside a park start with an intake form on the city's permit portal.^{source 1} According to Recreation and Parks, selling food, alcohol or merchandise makes an event a special event needing its own application, and the department asks for applications well ahead of the event date.^{source 2} Alcohol rules differ park by park: one picnic area's listing allows beer and wine only, with no glass or liquor, at some of its locations and none at another, while another listing says alcohol is not allowed.^{source 3,4} The state ABC district-office listing assigns San Francisco County to the San Francisco office.^{source 5} Rules change; confirm current requirements with the city and ABC before planning alcohol service.

Event spaces

Recreation and Parks offers the Meadows in Golden Gate Park as a park-setting venue, and calls the Music Concourse a high-foot-traffic venue between two of the park's museums.^{source 2} The department says it manages a very large number of parks, playgrounds and open spaces across the city, and that gatherings above a certain size need a separate large picnic application.^{source 6}

Season and weather

NOAA's San Francisco climate summary describes summertime as characterized by cool marine air and persistent coastal stratus and fog, so an outdoor summer reception can be cooler and breezier than the calendar suggests.^{source 7} The same summary says most of the city's seasonal rain falls from the late autumn into early spring, with rain from late spring through summer relatively rare.^{source 7}

Getting there

Golden Gate Ferry places its San Francisco terminal on the Embarcadero at the foot of Market Street and says there is no public parking at the terminal, only private paid lots and garages in the area.^{source 8} Muni is described by SFMTA as buses, light rail Metro trains, historic streetcars and cable cars, and BART lists Embarcadero and Civic Center/UN Plaza among its stations.^{source 9,10}
